KENYA: Relieving a Dire Wood Shortage Facing Somali Refugees

Lifeline’s program in Northeast Kenya helped address the severe wood shortage facing more than 500,000 Somali refugees encamped near Dadaab, whose influx has placed a dangerous strain on the area’s fragile desert environment. In 2008, Lifeline began implementing a fuel saving stove program for these refugees with a new staff of 35 refugee workers.

Imagine a water supply that is accessed, managed, maintained and sustained by rural communities. That’s the vision behind Lifeline’s EverFlow Africa program, a community-funded rural water pump maintenance project to maintain rural water points so they run and have near 100 percent water all the time.

Getting clean water quickly isn’t just a matter of convenience to rural communities – it’s often the difference between life and death. The H2O + Water Initiative – piloted by Lifeline and Blue Planet Network in 2012 – aimed to bring clean water to rural populations and help under-served health clinics and communities in the Pallisa District of eastern Uganda, where 39 percent of the population lack access to clean water.

In rural Uganda, 1 in 12 children dies from preventable water-borne diseases before the age of 5. Without a piped water system, women and girls are forced to collect water for their households from contaminated lakes and puddles, or travel to a well in another village, which takes an average of two hours per day.

Her story is one of millions that are an inspiration of transformation for us all: a living example of community and self-actualization.

Over 1.3 million refugees have fled to Uganda since 2016 because of renewed fighting, food scarcity and economic deprivation throughout South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

It’s a Record: Lifeline Hits Milestone…

Lifeline reached a new milestone at its factory in Lira, Uganda, producing 12,000 efficient household cookstoves in the month of February alone. Production capacity has doubled in recent months to keep pace with the growing demand for efficient household energy products across Uganda.
